A Pilgrim's Set of Accessories
ca. mid twentieth century book: 9 1/2" x 6 1/2", 24 cm x 16.5 cm box: 3 1/2" x 9" x 12", 9 cm x 23 cm x 30.5 cm This is a collection of seven items, all contained within a lacquer box--used by a devout Buddhist as he attempted a pilgrimage visiting a prescribed route of temples; most likely this pilgrimage route was in service of visiting holy temples that related to esoteric Buddhism in Japan's western area on Honshu Island. The box contains two juzu, or Buddhist 'rosaries' used for chanting and repetition of holy names or mantras; the larger of the two here contains 108 beads, 108 being a holy number. As well there is a cotton collar worn on the neck of the pilgrim as he goes on his rounds; it is machine sewn, with kanji that most likely portray a mantra or a section of a sutra. Also there is the beautiful suin-cho or stamp book, which the pilgrim presented at each of the temples he visited: the temple priest would generally write the date and name of the temple and then stamp the book with the 'official' seal of the temple. This suin-cho contains 50 pages, 7 of which are stamped, four of the seven are stamped on both sides. Lastly, there are three small silk brocade pouches, two of which contained the juzu, the largest of which closes using a zipper. This is a wonderful kit which emanates good vibrations, and it is a pleasure to have in one's home. Recommended.
