| ca. early to mid twentieth century 82" x 62", 208 cm x 157.5 cm The cotton kantha stitched textiles from West Bengal and Bihar (called sujanis in Bihar), India and Bangladesh are a famous and widely recognized folk textile art and one of India's most prized and sought-after textile traditions. We are exceedingly pleased to offer this large, excellently stitched and stunningly designed kantha. Kantha stitching has its roots in ingenuity and the culture of women: used white dhotis (men's sarongs) and women's sarees were salvaged, cut and layered: thread from the colored, embroidered borders of the used garments were pulled free from the rags and used as embroidery threads for quilted work, the border threads usually being black and red, blue and red, and sometimes yellow, orange and green. Quilts, bags and clothing were embroidered using a running, stem and satin stitch, the quilts and coverlets were constructed of many layers, the number of layers dependent of the weather of the region where a particular kantha was stitched. This magnificent work is large enough to use as a bed cover or throw, and it is said to have been acquired in a village near Dhaka, Bangldesh. It is stitched from about 3 or four layers of cotton cloth. The pattern is wonderfully askew: it appears that the pattern was intended to be an iteration of the interlocking circles motif. Or, on the other hand, it could be a repeat pattern of leaf forms. In any case, notice how the regularity of the pattern falters and dissolves in areas: this is the charm of the piece. In the center of each of the white spaces--each of which is heavily stitched--can be seen the shostir chinho, a kind of swastika representation of the eternal movement of the universe. The border is taken from a sari and is stitched to the perimeter of the piece. In wonderful, bright condition with the exception of slight staining to one "block" of pattern, which can be seen at "12 o'clock" and in detail photos. Very highly recommended. This is a wonderfully good kantha with a fabulous pattern. | ||||||||||||||
