| ca. mid twentieth century 7 1/2" yards x 7", 6.85 cm x 18 cm This absolutely gorgeous and technically complex long, dyed cotton gauze textile is a mothara turban which was dyed in Rajasthan, India, the locus of this type of wrap-resist dyeing. The cotton gauze was pleated and wrapped before it was dyed; Japanese textile aficionados would know this kind of shape-resist dyeing as shibori--and this mothara technique is akin to arashi shibori. In order to achieve the "cross hatch" effect of this all over pattern, the cloth was dyed on two opposing diagonals. The decorative, striped end piece, shown in details, is said to belong to another dyeing technique called lahariya, another dyeing technique popular in Rajasthan. This turban was used and bears a few , faint stains and about five or so small holes, but otherwise it is in fine shape. | |||||||||||
