Whimsical would be the best way to describe this unusual fruit quilt. I believe they are meant to be apples but one can also make a case for cherries. Regardless of which you prefer, it is in excellent condition; made circa 1870. It is quilted with concentric diamonds and has a border on three sides that alternates the colors of the fruit. Measurements are 80 inches square.

This Russian Sunflower pattern quilt also goes by the names of Rising Sun and Sunburst. The It is quilted with small stitches in diagonal lines. The quilt was made by Rachel Blackmore McLin (1800 - 1874) who lived in Leesburg, Tennessee. Condition is excellent...

This Hexagons quilt is unusual for several reasons. It is a charm quilt which means that no fabric is repeated. Many are similar but on close examination it is evident that they are not the same print. The overall design of the pattern is also well out of the ordinary. A number of the fabrics have figures and animals. The quilt is in excellent condition. Measurements are 82" x 88", large for the 1870's when it was made. Pennsylvania origin.

Touching Stars was a popular quilt pattern in Pennsylvania in the 19th century. This example is especially finely quilted with a variety of intricate floral patterns in the white off blocks. The batting is quite thin so the quilting may not show up as well on the screen as in real life. The colors are thoughtfully planned with the yellow centers adding a nice amount of "pop". Measurements are 90" square. Condition is immaculate. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1870's.

This geometric quilt looks as though it would be a known pattern but I have been unable to locate another. I have given it a descriptive name but one would more accurately have to call it a Three and a Half Patch pattern. Setting it in strips with good use of lights and darks gives it lots of movement. Regardless of what one calls it, it is an interesting pattern made with beautiful fabrics that date from the 1850's to 1870's...

This well designed, bold Laurel Leaf quilt is a traditional pattern done in an unusual way. The same block is repeated throughout but the placement of color and the double sawtooth frames makes it appear as though more is going on. It gives it a contemporary feel even though it was made in the 1860's.The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition. Measurements are 72" x 73".

This beautiful applique quilt appears to be an original pattern alternating with traditional oakleaves. The red fabric is as unusual as the pattern. It is very well quilted with wreaths between the applique. The centers have different designs including hearts; stars; apples; flowers and a pear. The quilt is in excellent unwashed condition. There is slight unevenness to the background that could be remedied with a wash but I don't feel it is necessary. Measurements are 86" x 88"...

The outer chintz border has cherubs throughout...

This quilt most closely known as Shoo Fly (aka Alamanizer) is an unusual combination of elegant and country. The basic quilting; medium thick batting and plaid ground give it a very country feel. At the same time, there is a blue glazed cotton used throughout that is most often seen in far "dressier" pieces. The maker evidently had an eye for detail as in the lower right block, she pieced the same blue striped fabric in four different designs. The quilt measures 82" x 88"...
