This finely made Mariner's Compass quilt is dense in both piecing and use of patterned fabrics. The fabric of printed circles of the background is an imaginative choice to mirror the circular compasses. The points of the compasses and sawtooth triangles are crisp and well defined. The quilt is in unwashed condition with one condition apology. There were some cracks in one side of the border fabric. It has been covered with invisible netting sewn over that end of the entire quilt...

This wonderfully exuberant Pineapple applique and pieced quilt has it all. The stems of the pineapples converge to create an additional pattern. The pineapples are nicely detailed with pieced triangles and appliqued shapes. Not content with just the beautiful swag and tassel border, the maker added two toned birds throughout the edging. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition. There is light discoloration throughout the back but the front is spotless...

This Fence Rail Log Cabin doll quilt is made of richly colored plush velvets. Each block is just 2 inches to a side. The quilt is in a goldleaf frame (not of the period) measuring 13 3/4" x 20". The quilt appears to be in perfect condition although I have not seen it out of the frame. There are a few chips to the frame. The colors are beautifully coordinated. The quilt dates to about the 1890's.

This Sawtooth quilt is made of a glorious collection of printed fabrics from the 1820's to about 1840. It is well pieced and quilted. A note sewn to the back says "Loaned by Mr. and Mrs. WD Miller Winged Square Made by Mr. Miller's Grandmother". It is believed to be from Long, Island, New York but further information is not known. The quilt was in the collection of Patricia Smith. It has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition. Measurements are 80" x 95".

This striking geometric design hooked mat would serve equally well on a table or mounted on a wall. It measures 11 inches square and is made of wool. It is in excellent condition. The cotton calico fabric on the back leads me to date to about 1900. Pennsylvania origin.

This Centennial quilt featuring George Washington is a one of a kind. The quilt combines an embroidered portrait of our first president with a traditional quilt pattern particular to the community of Bowmansville in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. This small burg is known for overall quilt patterns made of groups of light and dark squares. The maker of this particular quilt expressed her patriotic bent when she made her quilt most likely to commemorate the Centennial in 1876...

Bowmansville, a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania is known for their quilts that are most often Star patterns made of squares. To my knowledge, this variation is unique. The complex and bold overall pattern is made of 1 1/2 inch squares of printed fabrics. The quilt measures 70" square. It is in excellent condition; made circa 1890.

This Sampler quilt, in which each block is different, is a friendship quilt as well. Each block has numerous inked signatures. It is dated 1913. Most likely, the quilt was made as a parting gift for a significant member of the community. Measurements are 68" x 77"; excellent condition.

This Compass Stars quilt is unusual both for the pattern and the fact that the indigo is used as the ground. More often, one would find a navy pattern on a white ground. Four Patch corner blocks show a nice attention to detail. It is very well quilted and in excellent condition. Measurements are 76 inches square; made circa 1880.

Everything about this Economy Patch quilt is delicate and finely crafted. The scale of the quilting and piecework are wonderfully diminutive. Each diamond in square block is just 2 1/4" to a side. The addition of the same blocks in the corners is further indication of the maker's attention to detail. It is well quilted with small wreaths in the off blocks as well as waffle quilting and floral patterns in the border...

This strong Ocean Waves quilt is as crisp as the day it was made nearly 140 years ago. It was clearly packed away and well cared for. The red background is a real stand out against the many small triangles, most of which are printed fabrics. It is quilted with the traditional patterns of cable in the border and floral wreaths in the red diamonds. Measurements are 60" x 64". Pennsylvania origin; circa 1880.

This bold Lone Star quilt (aka Star of Bethlehem or Star of Texas) has possibly the finest quilting I have seen on this pattern. It is exquisitely tightly done in a waffle pattern. The diamonds are a mere half an inch to a side throughout the body of the quilt. The borders are quilted with triple groups of diagonal lines. The single row of pink diamonds gives a nice "pop" to the otherwise dark colors. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition...

To the best of my knowledge, this Center Medallion Floral Wreath quilt is an original pattern. A bunch of tulips is in the very center and in the corners. The central wreath and vined border have a different flower and buds. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition. Measurements are 80" x 90. Inked signatures on the back are Kezzie H. Nye and C.L. Peck. Made circa 1860; Pennsylvania origin.

This Light and Dark Log Cabin quilt has beautiful highlights of burnt orange. The centers are made of several different red/orange fabrics, one of which is used for the borders. The front is made of wool challis and the back is cotton calico. The quilt is in better than very good condition. It has several very tiny nicks in the border but no other condition apologies. Measurements are 70" x 78". Pennsylvania origin; circa 1870's

This President's Wreath (aka Centennial Wreath or Wreath of Roses) quilt is exquisitely appliqued, quilted and pieced. The floral wreaths are full and delicate. The white blocks are elaborately quilted with wreath patterns. A pieced double border of diamonds is further indication of the maker's unending attention to detail. The colors are a soft red and teal blue/gray. The blue appliques holding the buds are in the shape of hearts...

This is an extremely finely crafted example of one of America's most classic quilt patterns - Barnraising Log Cabin. It is as crisp as the day it was made in the 1880's. It has a wonderful and unusual border. Rather than the more traditional piano key in which all of the strips face the same direction, this divides in the middle of each side to create a V in the center. It is made of a well placed combination of solid and printed fabrics. Measurements are 82" square...

This Indigo and white Carpenter's Square quilt is a terrific version of a very three dimensional pattern. While there are actually only four of the carpenter's square blocks, their overlapping placement makes it appear as though there are more. The quilting in a pattern of squares on point furthers the overall theme. The edges of the carpenter's squares seem to meld into the five borders. Measurements are 76" square; circa 1880. Excellent condition.
