This is a particularly well made version of a traditional Garden Maze Quilt. The center of each maze is quilted with a LeMoyne Star pattern. Corner blocks are created by extending the mazes. The scalloped edge is a nice counterpoint to the hard edges of the Maze pattern. Cable quilting in the border gracefully follows the scallops. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. Measurements are 80" square. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1920's.

This exuberant Pots of Flowers Quilt is finely quilted and appliqued. It is dated 1876 in quilting with initials EG. Abutting hearts in the center are a lovely design but the star they form makes it even more special. The center design is surrounded by a quilted wreath. Partial wreaths are throughout the body of the quilt. Flower buds in the pots are repeated in the border to make it all a perfectly unified design. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in mint condition...

This chintz quilt with exquisite fabrics has several unusual features. It appears that it was meant to go horizontally as one edge does not have a border so that was probably meant to indicate it was for the top of the bed. All of the fabrics appear to be from the 1830's with the exception of two corner blocks with 1870's fabrics. They seem to be original but something of a mystery. There is a wonderful variety of indigo chintz fabrics, several of which have cherubs...

This appliqued; pieced and embroidered doll quilt is an unusual combination of pattern and technique. It is divided into an overall windowpane design within which are a combination of flowers and strips much like a log cabin. The entire composition is thoughtfully and imaginatively laid out. The quilt is professionally mounted on a stretcher measuring 20" x 20 1/2". Excellent condition; Pennsylvania origin; circa 1890.

This Nine Patch quilt was made with an artists's eye. It is a country calico quilt with color arrangement that elevates it to a more sophisticated level. The blue and yellow Nine Patches predominate each Twentyfive Patch block. Repeating the Nine Patch in each corner is a thoughtful touch. The Streak of Lightning border creates a bold frame...

Feeling patriotic, anyone? This unusual Shields quilt is combined with diamonds in squares to create an original, all-American design. Half diamonds frame the pattern well. The quilting is not elaborate. It is done in straight lines in the body of the quilt and diamonds in the border. The concentric diamonds are machine appliqued. The quilt is in excellent condition. There is one light smudge that can likely be removed with a wash but I have done nothing to it as I do not find it bothersome...

The basis of this quilt is a Nine Patch pattern but the way it is put together adds additional interest. The alternating of light and dark blocks in addition to the center frame make it a wonderfully abstract composition. It is a beautiful shade of medium blue from the 1920's. The quilt is in pristine, un-used condition. Measurements are 82" x 98"; Pennsylvania origin.

This Princess Feather (aka Prince's Feather) quilt has two particularly unusual features. The central motif as well as the centers of the feathers are all stuffed applique. Four hearts surround the very center motif. Yellow within the stuffed work appliques really makes them pop. The other especially distinctive feature is that the feathers terminate in unusual pointed shapes. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. It is nicely quilted with a variety of patterns...

Whig's Defeat is a pattern not often seen, perhaps because of the difficulty executing it. This complex example is especially finely crafted. The piece work; applique and quilting are all of the highest quality. The zigzag border sets it all off perfectly. The colors are as unusual and pleasing as the pattern. Measurements are an unusual 60" x 98". In addition to working on a single size bed, it would be ideal hung vertically in a stairwell or horizontally over a mantel or piece of furniture...

This Light and Dark Log Cabin quilt is a fine example of the logs often made of fine wool challis in Pennsylvania during the third quarter of the 19th century. This quilt has more going for it than being beautifully made and color coordinated. It is also well documented and illustrated in "Layers: Unfolding the Stories of Chester County Quilts". It is accompanied by a note saying it was "Made by Mary M. Shields about 1850 Log Cabin pattern". A copy of the book is included with the purchase...

This wonderfully exuberant Pineapple applique and pieced quilt has it all. The stems of the pineapples converge to create an additional pattern. The pineapples are nicely detailed with pieced triangles and appliqued shapes. Not content with just the beautiful swag and tassel border, the maker added two toned birds throughout the edging. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition. There is light discoloration throughout the back but the front is spotless. There are ...

The quilt appears to be in perfect condition although I have not seen it out of the frame. There are a few chips to the frame. The colors are beautifully coordinated. The quilt dates to about the 1890's.
