This appliqued; pieced and embroidered doll quilt is an unusual combination of pattern and technique. It is divided into an overall windowpane design within which are a combination of flowers and strips much like a log cabin. The entire composition is thoughtfully and imaginatively laid out. The quilt is professionally mounted on a stretcher measuring 20" x 20 1/2". Excellent condition; Pennsylvania origin; circa 1890.

This Nine Patch quilt was made with an artists's eye. It is a country calico quilt with color arrangement that elevates it to a more sophisticated level. The blue and yellow Nine Patches predominate each Twentyfive Patch block. Repeating the Nine Patch in each corner is a thoughtful touch. The Streak of Lightning border creates a bold frame...

Feeling patriotic, anyone? This unusual Shields quilt is combined with diamonds in squares to create an original, all-American design. Half diamonds frame the pattern well. The quilting is not elaborate. It is done in straight lines in the body of the quilt and diamonds in the border. The concentric diamonds are machine appliqued. The quilt is in excellent condition. There is one light smudge that can likely be removed with a wash but I have done nothing to it as I do not find it bothersome...

The basis of this quilt is a Nine Patch pattern but the way it is put together adds additional interest. The alternating of light and dark blocks in addition to the center frame make it a wonderfully abstract composition. It is a beautiful shade of medium blue from the 1920's. The quilt is in pristine, un-used condition. Measurements are 82" x 98"; Pennsylvania origin.

This Princess Feather (aka Prince's Feather) quilt has two particularly unusual features. The central motif as well as the centers of the feathers are all stuffed applique. Four hearts surround the very center motif. Yellow within the stuffed work appliques really makes them pop. The other especially distinctive feature is that the feathers terminate in unusual pointed shapes. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. It is nicely quilted with a variety of patterns...

Whig's Defeat is a pattern not often seen, perhaps because of the difficulty executing it. This complex example is especially finely crafted. The piece work; applique and quilting are all of the highest quality. The zigzag border sets it all off perfectly. The colors are as unusual and pleasing as the pattern. Measurements are an unusual 60" x 98". In addition to working on a single size bed, it would be ideal hung vertically in a stairwell or horizontally over a mantel or piece of furniture...

This President's Wreath quilt is a masterpiece in every way. It is finely appliqued with a most unusual border. The white off blocks are the perfect palette to show off the extraordinary quilting. Fine piping between the border and the body of the quilt is an additional indication of the care with which this quilt was made. It measures 100" x 104"; large enough for a queen or king size bed. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in immaculate condition. Made circa 1850.

This Light and Dark Log Cabin quilt is a fine example of the logs often made of fine wool challis in Pennsylvania during the third quarter of the 19th century. This quilt has more going for it than being beautifully made and color coordinated. It is also well documented and illustrated in "Layers: Unfolding the Stories of Chester County Quilts". It is accompanied by a note saying it was "Made by Mary M. Shields about 1850 Log Cabin pattern". A copy of the book is included with the purchase...

This finely made Mariner's Compass quilt is dense in both piecing and use of patterned fabrics. The fabric of printed circles of the background is an imaginative choice to mirror the circular compasses. The points of the compasses and sawtooth triangles are crisp and well defined. The quilt is in unwashed condition with one condition apology. There were some cracks in one side of the border fabric. It has been covered with invisible netting sewn over that end of the entire quilt...

This wonderfully exuberant Pineapple applique and pieced quilt has it all. The stems of the pineapples converge to create an additional pattern. The pineapples are nicely detailed with pieced triangles and appliqued shapes. Not content with just the beautiful swag and tassel border, the maker added two toned birds throughout the edging. The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition...

This Fence Rail Log Cabin doll quilt is made of richly colored plush velvets. Each block is just 2 inches to a side. The quilt is in a goldleaf frame (not of the period) measuring 13 3/4" x 20". The quilt appears to be in perfect condition although I have not seen it out of the frame. There are a few chips to the frame. The colors are beautifully coordinated. The quilt dates to about the 1890's.

This Centennial quilt featuring George Washington is a one of a kind. The quilt combines an embroidered portrait of our first president with a traditional quilt pattern particular to the community of Bowmansville in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. This small burg is known for overall quilt patterns made of groups of light and dark squares. The maker of this particular quilt expressed her patriotic bent when she made her quilt most likely to commemorate the Centennial in 1876. Measurements are 92...
