This well designed, bold Laurel Leaf quilt is a traditional pattern done in an unusual way. The same block is repeated throughout but the placement of color and the double sawtooth frames makes it appear as though more is going on. It gives it a contemporary feel even though it was made in the 1860's.The quilt has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition. Measurements are 72" x 73".

This beautiful applique quilt appears to be an original pattern alternating with traditional oakleaves. The red fabric is as unusual as the pattern. It is very well quilted with wreaths between the applique. The centers have different designs including hearts; stars; apples; flowers and a pear. The quilt is in excellent unwashed condition. There is slight unevenness to the background that could be remedied with a wash but I don't feel it is necessary. Measurements are 86" x 88"...

This interesting quilt depicts streamlined versions of the American Great Seal Eagle. In one talon are arrows indicating that the United States will defend itself if threatened. The other talon depicts what are meant to be olive branches, the symbol of peace. One would have to be familiar with these to recognize them on the quilt as it is rather stylized. The graceful wreath in the center of the quilt contrasts with the strength of the image of the eagle...

This stunning Lone Star (aka Star of Bethlehem) has all of the features one would wish for in a quilt of this type. It is finely quilted with floral patterns; crosshatch and quadruple diagonal lines. It has a thin batting that makes it a little difficult to see the quilting well in the photos. The central star is framed with borders of diamonds; Lemoyne Stars and Tree Everlasting. The outer chintz border has cherubs throughout...

This quilt most closely known as Shoo Fly (aka Alamanizer) is an unusual combination of elegant and country. The basic quilting; medium thick batting and plaid ground give it a very country feel. At the same time, there is a blue glazed cotton used throughout that is most often seen in far "dressier" pieces. The maker evidently had an eye for detail as in the lower right block, she pieced the same blue striped fabric in four different designs. The quilt measures 82" x 88"...

Robbing Peter to Pay Paul is the perfect name for this positive/negative quilt pattern. It is made of fine cotton sateen in a beautiful shade of blue. The rounded cable patterning of the quilting in the border echoes the circles of the main pattern. It is from Pennsylvania; circa 1920. The front of the quilt is in excellent condition. There is some darkening on the back where it has been folded for many years but it does not show through to the front. Measurements are 74" x 76".

This is a particularly well made version of a traditional Garden Maze Quilt. The center of each maze is quilted with a LeMoyne Star pattern. Corner blocks are created by extending the mazes. The scalloped edge is a nice counterpoint to the hard edges of the Maze pattern. Cable quilting in the border gracefully follows the scallops. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. Measurements are 80" square. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1920's.

This exuberant Pots of Flowers Quilt is finely quilted and appliqued. It is dated 1876 in quilting with initials EG. Abutting hearts in the center are a lovely design but the star they form makes it even more special. The center design is surrounded by a quilted wreath. Partial wreaths are throughout the body of the quilt. Flower buds in the pots are repeated in the border to make it all a perfectly unified design. This chintz quilt with exquisite fabrics has several unusual features. It appears that it was meant to go horizontally as one edge does not have a border so that was probably meant to indicate it was for the top of the bed. All of the fabrics appear to be from the 1830's with the exception of two corner blocks with 1870's fabrics. They have been finely sewn on top of the quilt. There is a wonderful variety of indigo chintz fabrics, several of which have cherubs...

This appliqued; pieced and embroidered doll quilt is an unusual combination of pattern and technique. It is divided into an overall windowpane design within which are a combination of flowers and strips much like a log cabin. The entire composition is thoughtfully and imaginatively laid out. This Nine Patch quilt was made with an artists's eye. It is a country calico quilt with color arrangement that elevates it to a more sophisticated level. The blue and yellow Nine Patches predominate each Twentyfive Patch block. Repeating the Nine Patch in each corner is a thoughtful touch. The Streak of Lightning border creates a bold frame...

The basis of this quilt is a Nine Patch pattern but the way it is put together adds additional interest. The alternating of light and dark blocks in addition to the center frame make it a wonderfully abstract composition. It is a beautiful shade of medium blue from the 1920's. The quilt is in pristine, un-used condition. Measurements are 82" x 98"; Pennsylvania origin.

Whig's Defeat is a pattern not often seen, perhaps because of the difficulty executing it. This complex example is especially finely crafted. The piece work; applique and quilting are all of the highest quality. The zigzag border sets it all off perfectly. The colors are as unusual and pleasing as the pattern. Measurements are an unusual 60" x 98". In addition to working on a single size bed, it would be ideal hung vertically in a stairwell or horizontally over a mantel or piece of furniture. It...

This Light and Dark Log Cabin quilt is a fine example of the logs often made of fine wool challis in Pennsylvania during the third quarter of the 19th century. This quilt has more going for it than being beautifully made and color coordinated. It is also well documented and illustrated in "Layers: Unfolding the Stories of Chester County Quilts". It is accompanied by a note saying it was "Made by Mary M. Shields about 1850 Log Cabin pattern". A copy of the book is included with the purchase. Mary...
