The name of this quilt pattern, Old Italian Block, is a mystery to me but it seems to be well established. This example is done with a glorious combination of stunning fabrics. All are in unwashed, pristine condition. The outer border is a highly glazed chintz. Oddly, the back is a cotton muslin. One would have expected a "dressier" choice given the front but perhaps she the maker indulged all she could with the front of the quilt. It is quilted throughout with blocks of diamonds. This unusual Herringbone pattern is fabulously three dimensional. It is made of a very nice selection of late 19th century solid and printed fabrics. The backing is a red paisley print to which it is totally reversible for a very different quilt. The paisley is also used for some of the strips on the front of the quilt. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1880. Excellent condition; there is a seam separating the quilt from the border that is a little wonky but that appears to have been in the making. This wonderfully graphic quilt "reads" as both Streak of Lightning and Tumbling Blocks. It is difficult to know whether that was the maker's intention. The use of solid colors heightens the effect of both patterns. It is as well crafted as it is designed. Measurements are 70" x 73"; excellent condition. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1910.

Wonderfully graphic Windmill Blades Log Cabin quilt (aka Pineapple Log Cabin) in the unexpected colors of lavender and white. The diamond border adds to the impact. It is interesting that the centers of each block repeat the border pattern. The backing is the same lavender as used on the front. It is in pristine condition; measurements are 72" x 86". Pennsylvania origin; circa 1920.

$3950.

This Mariner's Compass quilt is one of the most exquisitely crafted that I have seen. Each Compass is made of 106 triangles, all tapering to a fine point. The ground is beautifully quilted with concentric wreaths. And in case all of that wasn't enough, the maker finished it with a double triangle border! Measurements are 70" x 80"; made circa 1870; excellent condition.

This Barnraising Log Cabin quilt is one of the finest examples of a classic pattern. It is made of a stunning combination of wool challis fabrics. The reds are continuously used throughout to give a spark to the more muted browns, blues and greens. Solid and printed fabrics are perfectly combined. The quilt is in excellent condition. Measurements are 91" square. Old Order Mennonite from Pennsylvania; circa 1870.

This classic Tulip Wreaths quilt is different from the usual in that it is not red and green. Instead of red, it has a terra cotta or brick color lightened with yellow floral centers. The border beautifully continues the applique of the body of the quilt. The quilt is in outstanding, unwashed condition. It is nicely quilted with flowers and pineapples. Measurements are 86" x 88". Pennsylvania origin; circa 1870.

Dramatic barely describes this wonderful Philadelphia Pavement Quilt. Postage stamp size pieces, while set on square, give the impression of a diagonal design because of the use of color. The consistent use of bands of yellow, red and blue create both an overall X and Diamond patterns. It is well quilted with cable patterns in the borders and small diamonds throughout the body. Excellent condition; circa 1880. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania origin. Measurements are 82" x 86".

This early Garden Maze quilt is done with the richest of colors. The deep indigo is beautifully offset by the wonderful and unusual rose printed fabric. It is nicely quilted with circles in the center of each block. The Wild Goose Chase border frames it all perfectly. Excellent condition; circa 1850. New York State origin.

This applique quilt is light, airy and graceful. The body is quilted with a crosshatch pattern with half wreaths along the border and full wreaths in the corners. The leaves look like grape leaves which is why I think the circles are not berries but that is open to interpretation. It has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1860. Measurements are 78" x 80".
