What I have termed a Feathered Squares quilt is a much more abstract pattern than one usually sees in blue and white quilts of the late 19th century. The nine feathered squares within squares are placed so as to create an additional pattern from the space between them. It is quilted with a chain pattern throughout the white areas. The quilt is in excellent condition. Measurements are 86" x 95"; made 1880's.
It is interesting to see that simply using two different size rectangles can create such a dynamic Streak of Lightning quilt. The dark indigo triangles are larger than the white making for a deeper tone than had they been the same size. The pattern is equally effective vertically and horizontally. Measurements are 73" x 79".
This triangles quilt pattern most closely resembles Birds in the Air but technically is a bit different. Both fabrics are tiny prints that blend well together. The backing is a complimentary small print. It is very well pieced and in excellent, unwashed condition. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1880's. Measurements are 78" x 85".
The use of solid colors make this Ocean Waves quilt especially strong. It is beautifully planned with red triangles inside the triple borders making an additional frame. The dark color is an unusual one. It is somewhere between charcoal gray and dark brown. It appears always to have been that color - not faded from black. Measurements are 78" x 79". It is well pieced and quilted with waffle patterning in the red blocks and a cable pattern incorporated through the three borders. Pennsyl ...click for details
This oak leaf pattern quilt is a fine example of a traditional pattern. It is very well quilted with cable patterns throughout. The oak leaves may appear to be rust or brick color but they are actually red. The deep green background may make the color darker on some monitors. The triangle border is a lighter red.
The quilt is in pristine, un-used condition. The backing is a pink and green calico Bars pattern. It is very well crafted. The quilting, piecing and applique are all finely done. Penns ...click for details
This lively wild goose chase quilt beautifully combines the geometric block pattern with the softened edges of the applique border. Nicely quilted with waffle patterning on the body of the quilt and clamshell in the border. Measurements are 80" x 88". New York state origin, circa 1850s.
This Thousand Pyramids quilt is made of 100% different fabrics. The fact that no fabric is repeated is what makes it what is referred to as a Charm Quilt. The pattern would be appealing were it not for this use of fabrics but the lack of duplication makes it even more of a success.
The quilt is in mint, unwashed condition; circa 1880's. Pennsylvania origin; measurements are
The choice and placement of colors create additional patterns within the traditional Economy Patch. The consistent use of green center squares surrounded by a variety of red, pinks, blues and yellows make for nice diagonal movement as well. The purpleish border is a surprising touch. It is well pieced and quilted. The quilt is in outstanding, unwashed condition. There is a small light spot on the border that appears to be a flaw in the printing rather than a later loss of color. This Postage Stamp quilt might also be called Trip Around the World for the way the blocks on point are laid out in squares. The light color centers of each group add a nice quirky accent and combine well with the light banding around each group.Probably Southern origin based upon the gauzy ivory color backing fabric. Measurements are 73"x 90"; circa 1880.
This exuberant Pot of Flowers crib quilt is truly an original. The maker was clearly committed to filling all of the space and she did so with artistry and imagination. The quilt is made of silk fabrics and dates to the 1860s or 1870s. Several of the flowers are stuffed to be three dimensional. The quilt is professionally mounted on a stretcher measuring 35.75" x 46.5".
