Lovely Cake Stand Baskets quilt done in soft pastels of the 1930's. Nicely planned with solid colors for the body of the baskets and prints on the bases and tops. Very good, unwashed condition. Measures 84" square; Pennsylvania origin.
Somerset County, Pennsylvania Amish Concentric Squares Quilt - or is it Josef Albers? This wonderfully direct homage to the square preceded similar paintings by the famed artist. Heavy, fuzzy wool fabrics in deep, rich colors. Borders on two sides are interesting irregular rectangles. Measures 68" x 80".
Original pattern hooked rug of divided circles. Soft, muted colors with a subtly striped background. Excellent condition; one small repair visible on the back. Measures 36" x 41". Wool with cotton binding; circa 1930.
Bold pair of appliqued pillow cases from Rarotonga, one of the Cook Islands in the South Pacific. Fascinating to see the similarity with something that could have been made across the world in the United States in the same time period.
Unwashed condition. Measure 27 3/4" x 20" including edging. Several different embroidery patterns in shaded tones embellish the applique. Circa 1970; Rarotonga.
Finely woven Navaho pictorial rug that is simultaneously detailed and streamlined. Subtle color change shows a corral fence in the distance. Mesas are wonderfully abstracted into geometric forms. Rich, warm colors with punchy red flowers. Measures 32 1/2" wide and 34" tall. Circa 1930; excellent condition.
Hooked rug with an utterly charming image of a huge hound. Soft colors of the dog are outlined in black. Wonderful huge red nose and piercing green eyes. Professionally mounted on a stretcher that follows the slightly octagonal shape of the rug. Excellent condition; professionally cleaned. Stretcher measures 33 1/2" x 43". Virginia origin; circa 1930.
Unusual Nine Patch Hooked Rug that is more like a quilt pattern than that of a rug. Made of fairly heavy wools and hooked (or shirred?)in an unusual way that makes the texture look like brain matter. Cleverly composed so that the rust colored squares both outline the Nine Patches and are repeated to form corner blocks. Rich colors; pristine condition. Measures 26 1/2" x 65". Circa 1930.
Fans quilt in colors that look like they've been drawn with crayons. The use of all solid colors makes for a bold image. A little primitive in construction but dynamic nonetheless. Measures 66 x 78"; Maryland origin. Circa 1930.
Nine Patch quilt on a chambray ground with wonderful gingham checks. Triangles connecting the Nine Patches create octagons in the off blocks making this more than a simple Nine Patch. A lovely country quilt in classic red, white and blue. (On my monitor, it looks more pinkish, but that is not the case.) Pristine, unwashed condition. Measures 73" x 82". Pennsylvania origin; circa 1910.
Absolutely charming crib quilt that is a miniaturized version of Sunbonnet Sue and Overall Sam. Each dress and shirt is a different fabric. Pristine, unwashed condition. Nicely quilted. Backing fabric of sailboats is equally interesting to use as a wholecloth quilt. Measures 45" x 54". Pennsylvania origin; 1930's.
