Hawaiian Applique Quilt: Circa 1940

Hawaiian quilts are rare and distinctive. They usually consist of a large, solid color central applique. It is made much like cut paperwork with the symmetrical design cut from a folded cloth that is appliqued to a contrasting color ground. They have "echo" quilting meaning that the stitches follow the outline of the applique. The motifs reflect stylized designs of island flora. This example has all the features of a traditional Hawaiian applique quilt. It was made in the 1940's or 50's and measures 68" x 80". Condition is excellent.
