| For many collectors, Baltimore Albums are the holy grail of 19th century quilts. This fine example combines both traditional and original blocks, all framed by the double step border seen in Maryland quilts. A note attached to the quilt reads "Made about 1850 by Grandmother Chamberlain". Census records indicate a Mary E. Chamberlain was a widowed dressmaker living in Baltimore at that time. Much research is being done to determine whether Baltimore Album quilts were the work of group projects or single makers as well as whether they were made as commercial ventures. This note adds a clue to the mystery. Condition is very good. There is a small, old repair on the left middle border and an area of deterioration on the white ground near it. They are visible in next to last thumbnail photo. There are several old patches on the back. Measurements are 96" square. | ||||||||||||||
