Rising Sun Quilt: Circa 1860; Maryland

This Rising Sun quilt (aka Russian Sunflower) has it all. It is a beautiful pattern with extraordinary quilting and extensive provenance. It was made by Mary Showman Poffenberger (1827-1902) for her husband Elias Poffenberger (1827-1901). The Poffenberger farm is well known because it was on the Antietam National Battlefield. The quilt was made close to the time of the Civil War. It measures 90" x 102". It is densely quilted with tiny stitches in multiple patterns. Each Sunflower is surrounded by a wreath. There are pots of flowers and other floral designs, all exquisitely done. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. There are several tiny brown spots that could most likely be removed with washing but many would not find it necessary.
