It is difficult to categorize this unique embroidered piece so I have termed it as needlework graffiti. It is a collection of animals; buildings; ships; clocks; flowers; flags; hearts and bottles. There are references to several newspapers including The Manchester Union: Boston Morning Journal and Boston Sunday Globe. There is a reference to The St. Louis Southwestern which is a railroad as well as Boston's Castle Square; My Lady Washington and Maryland. All are embroidered with the exception of velvet appliqued flowers in the upper left and right corners. Several animals have beaded eyes. The name Bridget Cronnin and the date 1902 probably refer to the maker but one cannot be certain. Surely there is a message or messages here but I have not been able to decipher them. Doing so would be a great project all the while admiring the terrific needlework details in this true piece of outsider art. The piece is mounted on a stretcher and in a wood frame measuring 33 1/2" X 36 1/2".
