| American Chestnut (Castanea vesca) Plate #104 from the work "The North American Sylva..." by Francois Andre Michaux, the American Edition published in 1857. These are hand finished Colored engravings. The plates measure 10.5" x 7". This plate reads Pl. 104 in upper right, Bessa del. bottom left, American Chestnut Dastanea vesca at bottom center, and J.N. Joly sculpt bottom right. The Title Page reads: "The North American Sylva; or, the Description of the Forest Trees of the United States, Canada, and Nova Scotia. Considered Particularly with Respect for their Use in the Arts and Their Introduction into Commerce. To Which is added A Description of the Most Useful of the European Forest Trees. Illustrated with 156 Colored Engravings Translated from the French of F. Andrew Michaux, Member of the Philosophidcal Society of Philadelphia, Etc. Etc, With Notes by J. Jay Smith, Editor of the Horticulturalist, Member of the Academy of Natural Sciences, Etc. In Three Volumes. Vol. 1. Philadelphia: Published by D. Rice & A.N. Hart, No.27 Minor Street 1857".
