This rare and unusual, finely constructed, Civil War Era, portable Field Surgeon's Operating or Gleason type Mortuary Table (also known as a Cooling Table) comes from the estate of a 4th generation New England medical doctor, and retains its original finish with wonderful patina.

The decorative and delicate detailing of this piece is at odds with its most gruesome history! Scalloped copper edge guards and the appealing pattern in which the drainage holes in the laminated wood tabletop were laid out contribute to visual appeal. The softwood table frame stands on nicely turned hardwood legs.

When opened and extended to its maximum dimensions, the table measures 72" long X 18.5" wide X 22" high. To facilitate ease of traveling, this portable table slides and folds to 40" long X 18.5" wide X 4" high. A leather carrying handle is attached to the table edge; legs, when folded, are secured in place with hooks.

Very fine original condition: expected overall wear (patina) with one hook missing and minor unobtrusive loss of laminate along lower table top edge measuring approximately 1/3” wide by 7”.

Offered for your consideration is a fabulous, large size, 19th century apothecary bottle sporting a fancy gold & black lettered painted glass label marked “P. ALOE. et CAN.”!

This hand blown, 12 inch tall bottle has a deep pontilled base and is in fine condition. The ground glass stopper has a few unobtrusive interior edge chips.

The label under glass (LUG) applied label is in very good condition, complete and some minor ‘crackling’ of the painted surface.

When viewing the glass label "in person", it is quite appealing and displays beautifully. Please note that the elongated, reddish mark seen on the label is a function of poor photography - it is only a reflection of another object in the room- and not a stain!

Offered for your consideration is a vintage, all-original, framed paper advertising sign for the cure of Gonorrhea, Gleet and Syphillis in men. Of interest is the matching 10.5" x 7.5" wood frame with the lightly stamped word "OKAY" on the top. This unusual piece of advertising dates to the early 1900's.

Condition: Mild, unobtrusive wear to the paper. The blue round label is affixed to the glass, not the actual paper. The frame retains 2 early holes used for hanging along with various surface dings and an early slice of wood missing from the right side of frame.

Historically, Pabst's Okay Specifics was cited by the 1906 FDA Act for various violations including failure to mention alcohol content, having no known curative ingredient, etc, resulting in frequent seizure and destruction of the product!

On a cold October day in 1977, an auction of the former estate of Dr. T.D.M. Wilson of Washington, Pennsylvania, took place. The last surviving relative to live in Dr. Wilson's former 1890 mansion had moved to smaller quarters, and many artifacts reflecting the Wilson's family history had to be auctioned off.

Dr. T.D.M. Wilson graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1875, and the following offered items from this estate auction provide an historical glimpse into his long medical career.

The first item is a fabulous 19th century brass DOCTOR T.D.M. Wilson sign measuring 14L x 9W inches, which likely adorned the entrance way to Dr. Wilson's office.

Also offered in this grouping is a rare group photo of Dr. Wilson (4th from the left) and other Phi Kappa Sigma members. The frame measures 16.5"L x 12.5"W. While the photo is a bit faded, the image is remarkable and includes a distinguished group of Phi Kappa Sigma members.

The third and fourth items in this grouping are a small, framed, 1909 AMA membership certificate with Dr. Wilson's name inscribed, and a very unusual IRS narcotic SPECIAL TAX STAMP from 1926. This Narcotic form is unique in that it names Dr. Wilson as the single physician allowed to dispense narcotics within the 23rd District of the State of Pennsylvania.

Finally, 2 handwritten letters postmarked in 1884 from Dr. Wilson to his loving wife are included, offering a small glimpse into his personal life.

Together, this is rich grouping of artifacts provides one a unique opportunity to further enhance one's collection of medical objects.

Discovered in Petaluma, California, this exceptional, late 19th century, medical doctor's advertising sign is constructed in what appears to be copper over brass metals. Boldly inscribed, “DOCTOR CHESTER L. CARLISLE”, this vintage sign measures 15” long x 12” wide. The letters were once painted and now show traces of old black paint in some areas. The beveled edges of the sign are soldered in place to further enhance the appearance of this wonderful sign. The original patina and surface are in untouched, "as found" condition.

A fabulous addition to any doctor or medical collection!

Medicine history:

EUPHORBIA PILUIFERA - noted in an 1891 JAMA abstract: Quite recently, at the suggestion of my friend Dr. E. T. Sabal, of Jacksonville, Florida, I have used the remedy named, euphorbia pilulifera, for the relief of a most stubborn case of hereditary asthma, and the results are such that I feel warranted in calling the attention of the profession to it, and also making an effort to compile some statistics which will be of service to us in the future. It is a popular domestic remedy in Australia, and has been used for the relief of coughs, colds and other like disturbances of the air-passages, but more especially in the treatment of asthma.

The inhalation of medicinal vapors was common practice during the late 19th and early 20th century. Inhaling devices came in many shapes and forms. This very decorative and functional inhaler was very popular during that period.

This lovely, late-Victorian-styled inhaler is primarily being sold for its original box. The box is complete and very detailed on all sides (including the top), sporting wonderful graphics and information on its many merits. The box measures 6.5" H x 4" W x 3.25" D and shows only mild wear and faint staining. Finding a complete box in this condition is quite uncommon.

The lamp is not complete and is minus its chimney and top medicinal pan.

The advertising says it all - great graphic and lung specific. The last patent date noted on the box is 1899, and the first patent date is stamped on the lamp as being Ag. (August) 4, 1885.
