A wonderfully nostalgic look back in time to early education of the Depression era 1930's!

This 32 page, Pre-Primer called "Everyday Doings" written by Julia Letheld Hahn, was published in 1935 by the Houghton Mifflin Company, and was acquired for use by the York, Pennsylvania, School District in 1936 (see ink stampings to front cover).

In wonderful condition with absolutely no evidence of use, this booklet was one workbook within the Child Development Series of Houghton Mifflin Early Readers.

The interior front cover page lists the table of contents and the interior back cover page lists instructional suggestions "For The Teacher".

A selection of photos are offered to show the colored interior pages, each of which holds a particular title and 4 numbered drawings related to the subject title. These pages were undoubtedly used by the teacher to promote in her young students, thought, creativity, verbal expressive ability, and the development of both vocabulary and sequential thinking ability, to name a few of the necessary reading readiness skills!

A rarely found, early 20th century teaching tool as these workbooks were designed to be used and then discarded!

Please disregard any white spots or lines or areas which appear to be lighter than the rest of the page. All color is even throughout with no fading. These photo imperfections are simply due to sunlight reflections.

Offered is an EXCEEDINGLY RARE, 19th century, oval, bent-wood oak-framed, child's school slate.

This wonderful, double-sided slate measures 10.25 inches x 14.25 inches and is in fine condition. This type of slate was also made in a smaller size, but either size is very, very seldom found today as the majority of 19th century school slates that were produced were rectangular in shape!

Close-up photos show the interesting wood frame seam as well as the hanging hole. Flecks of paint are evident here and there and are most concentrated in one corner on one side of the slate as shown in photos.

This rare oval slate is truly a must-have for any serious collector of early school memorabilia!

A fabulous find for the newly graduated school psychologist or special education teacher- a 52 year old version of the very well known intelligence assessment, the Stanford Binet Intelligence Scale, Form L-M, published by the Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston!!

Housed within its original "leatherette" suitcase which measures 15 inches x 10.75 inches x 4.25 inches, this 1960 Revision test kit appears to be nearly complete with all original test contents: test manual, small and large, printed, spiral-bound card materials, and its many assorted and varied manipulatives that are housed in individual divider boxes, some retaining the original covers! One manipulative, a small plastic chair, is broken although its broken pieces remain within the kit, and an extra, partially complete, Form Board is also present. The original plastic case handle remains although it was broken and re-glued at sometime previous to our ownership. At this point, the handle should be deemed as purely decorative and not for actual use. Discovered in Massachusetts, the assessment kit is presented for sale as found and has likely seen considerable use over the years! In perusing through its contents, one takes a fascinating walk through intelligence assessment history!

This 1960 Revision is the 3rd revision of this test which was first published in France in 1905 by the French psychologist, Alfred Binet, whom the French government commissioned with developing a method of identifying "intellectually deficient" children for their placement in special education programs. In 1916, at Stanford University, the psychologist, Lewis Terman, released a revised examination which became known as the "Stanford–Binet test". The development of the Stanford–Binet Intelligence Scales initiated the modern field of intelligence testing and was one of the first examples of an adaptive test. The 2nd revision of the test was published in 1937, and a selection of materials from the 1937 scale were deemed essential enough to be included in the 1960 Revision assessment.

Measuring 8 3/4 inches long x 2 1/2 inches wide x 1 3/4 high, this charming wooden pencil box remains in pristine condition despite the fact that it dates to pre-WWII Germany! (Marked "Made in Germany" on cover, lower right side of design) To set it apart from other vintage pencil boxes, this one contains a surprise when the lid is opened-- a diminutive working abacus!! Very, very unusual!!

To add to its charm, the pencil box cover bears a sweet early stencil of Snow White + the Seven Dwarfs! The scene depicts 5 of the dwarfs as well as Prince Charming, sadly escorting Snow White who is lying in her clear glass coffin, having already bitten into the evil witch's poisonous apple and fallen into a deep sleep. Apparently, Prince Charming does not yet realize that all it will take to wake Snow White is a kiss on the lips from him!

The pencil box retains its original hinges and latch and remains in wonderful condition albeit for the signature of a former owner written in black ink in the interior "Susan Smith".

This wonderful, late 19th / early 20th century photograph of students and teacher from a New England, one-room school house measures 10 x 8 inches including mat. Actual size of the sepia toned photo is 8 x 5 inches. The subjects are posed on the stairs in front of the schoolhouse porch or veranda. The ten young gentlemen in the front row, while quite fashionably attired, don’t appeared to be very enthusiastic about their participation in this photography session! Look at those faces!

Condition is wonderful- no rips or creases. The full view photo appears faded or lighter on the right hand side, but this is camera flash glare only- tones/coloration are uniform throughout as seen in close-up photo.

A delightful and early schoolhouse collectible!
