19thC RARE Exceptional Black Brazilian Bahai Doll

This stunning, 19th Century (circa 1850!!), Black Brazilian Bahai doll, is exceptional for both its size- a commanding 24 inches tall- and its outstanding detailing!

Her striking face is most extraordinary with molded contours and meticulously hand-stitched facial features: eyebrows, eyes, nostrils, mouth and teeth. Both her lips and eyes have been stitched so that they have depth; when you touch them you can feel that they rise above the facial surface! And her fingertips are finely articulated with finger nails constructed of quills!

On her head, she wears a red and gold flowered bandanna, topped with a straw basket. Her clothes are machine-stitched. Her pale pink bodice is lace trimmed, and a red and blue plaid scarf is tied about her neck- or it can be used as a shawl- both styles of wear shown in photos. Her ruffled edge, flower-patterned skirt is trimmed with an edge ruffle, and underneath she sports two muslin petty coats!

Her body is very tightly sewn- machine-stitched- of polished cotton which has been very firmly stuffed with cotton batting. It has also been carefully molded and contoured for precise realism. Note her "hour glass", Marilyn Monroe-type figure, her shapely legs, her well proportioned arms, and – not easily visible in photos- her generously proportioned bust line! Even her flowered shoes, which are done in the same fabric as her bandanna, have special touches: silver decorative trim jewelry, pointy toes, and heels!

Condition is quite good given her 70+ years of age. While mildly faded in places, her clothes remain free of holes, rips or threadbare areas. Her body remains firm in its construction with minor, hand-stitched repairs to age-related stress tears at the front of her neck, top of left foot and left elbow joint (see photos). The basket atop her head has had loss and is not as high as it once was.

A truly unique, stunning and extraordinarily RARE Black South American doll! No Black Memorabilia doll collection can be considered complete without containing such a doll!
