Measuring 9.5 inches wide by 12 inches long, this charming 19th century watercolor is signed in pencil in the lower right corner "C Vandyne". The watercolor features a young black boy sitting pensively as he anticipates a bite into his juicy watermelon slice! This watercolor was purchased at Christie's Auction in New York City by the previous owner on July 9, 1981, and it still retains the auction sticker on its back side as well as the typed identifying information also supplied by Christie's. A delightful piece of 19th century Black Americana! Please ignore any white streaks seen in photos; these are the result of light reflection off of the glass. |
