Offered is a wonderful, December 21, 1899, Vanity Fair magazine colored lithograph of noted English Physicist, John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh. John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh (12 November 1842 – 30 June 1919) was an English Physicist who, along with Sir William Ramsay, discovered the element Argon in 1894, an achievement for which he earned the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1904. He also discovered the phenomenon now called Rayleigh scattering and predicted the existence of the surface waves now known as Rayleigh waves. This lovely litho depicts The Baron in his laboratory, presumably in the midst of his Argon discovery. The litho is entitled "ARGON" in the center bottom and is dated in the upper right corner. The words "VANITY FAIR" are printed in the upper left corner, and in the lower left corner is printed, "Vincent Brooks Day & Son, Lithographer". The litho remains in its original frame (framed in Cleveland by The Bonfoey Company), and measures in frame, 14 3/4 inches x 20 3/4 inches. On the back side is pasted the framer's label as well as a small piece of paper citing the title of the litho, "ARGON", as well as naming Lord Strutt (misspelled 'Stratt'), and conveying the first selling price of $5.00! |
