Heyer was born in Haarhausen, Germany and studied at the College of Applied Arts in Berlin. In 1896 he moved to the village of Rakospalota near Budapest where he lived until his death. He began his career painting landscapes but soon began depicting animals and had a particular fondness for cats and kittens.
