James was a painter, teacher and writer, born in Richmond, VA. He lived in Richmond and also maintained a home in Salisbury, Vermont. He was a member of the Society of Washington Artists, the southern VermontArtists, the Academy of Fine Arts and Science (Richmond) and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond).
