Tom Nicholas (American, b. 1934)

Watercolor on paper, signed.

Nicholas was born in Middletown, CT September 26, 1934. He studied with Ernst Lohrmann in Meriden, CT (1949-1953) before attending The School of Visual Arts, NYC on scholarship (1953-1956). While there, he studied with illustrator Harold Fisk. His education continued at The Famous Artists School, Inc., Westport, CT (1957-1960). The Greenshield Grant (painting abroad, 1961-1962) helped Nicholas to continue to refine his talent, as did the summer workshops in Rockport, MA (1962-1965), Jade Foundation Watercolor Workshop, Carmel, CA (1978). He was one of the youngest artists to be elected an Associate (1963) and Academician (1970) of the National Academy of Design. Nicholas also earned this particular distinction from the American Watercolor Society (Dolphin Fellow, AWS). In addition, he held memberships in the Allied Artists of America; Salmagundi Club; Hudson Valley Art Association; North Shore Arts Association and more. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, OH; University of Utah, Metropolitan Museum of Art; Greenshields Museum, Montreal; GA Museum, Athens, GA; Farnsworth Museum, Rockland, ME and more. He won hundreds of awards, including a Gold Medal of Honor, Allied Artists of America (1968); Gold Medal of Honor, American Watercolor Society (1969); and numerous others from the Salmagundi Club, Rockport Art Association Academic Artists Association, and North Shore AA among other.

Nicholas is listed in Who Was Who in American Art by Falk.
