Mêne was “born in Paris . . . the son of a metal-turner. Apart from a few tips from René Compaire, Mêne was self-taught as a sculptor but built up a large reputation as an Animalier, producing figures which he cast in bronze himself. He established his own foundry in 1838 and thereafter had a thriving business in turning out small (bronzes) by the sand-cast process. He exhibited at the Salon from 1838 onwards, making his début with a group entitled Dog and Fox. He won a second class medal in 1848 and first class medals in 1852 and 1861, receiving also the Légion d’Honneur in the latter year. He also exhibited at the Great Exhibitions of 1851 and 1862 in London and many of his groups were designed with the British market in mind. After Barye, Mêne is probably the best known of the French Animalier school and his bronzes are today among the most highly prized in this genre.”

-James Mackay, The Dictionary of Western Sculptors in Bronze
