Camelia Whitehurst (American, 1871-1936)
Camelia was a Baltimore portrait painter who studied at the Charcoal Club with S. Edwin Whiteman and at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts with Chase and Beaux. Following her studies she traveled in Europe and had a studio in Paris. Her specialty was painting portraits of children. She was a member of the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts; the National Association of Women Artists; the Grand Central Art Gallery; North Shore Art Academy; Springfield Art League; the Society of Washington Artist; and others. Camelia exhibited her works at the following:
Corcoran Gallery of Art biennials, 1914-26 (three times); Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art Annuals, 1916-25, 1929; All Southern Exhibition, Charleston, SC, 1921 (prize); National Association of Women Artists, 1920 (prize), 1921 (honorable mention), 1923 (prize); Memphis, 1925 (medal); New Orleans, 1923 (prize); Jackson, MS, (gold); Baltimore, MD, 1931 (solo exhibition); others.
