Barchus was born in Salt Lake City, UT. She married John Barchus in 1880 and they settled in Portland, OR where she studied with William S. Parrott. Although her home and studio were in Portland, she painted in California throughout her long career. Barchus specialized in mountain landscapes of popular locations in Oregon, Alaska and California such as Mt. Hood, Mt. Shasta, Yosemite, Muir Glacier, and Crater Lake. A prolific painter, she was known as the “Oregon Artist,” and supported her family with her work. Postcards with reproductions of her paintings began appearing in 1906, among the first of their kind in the West.
