Exceptional Late Regency Davenport (or Captain’s) Desk in Rosewood. The top section (which slides forward) has a galleried top and a leather inset writing slope which opens to a stationary well with two working and two false drawers and on the side is a hinged pen and ink drawer. Below are two secretary slides above three graduated working (and false) drawers: the whole raised on lobed, bun feet with castors. Circa 1820-30 Height: 32” The name "davenport" which came to be associated with this form of furniture, is assumed to have come from an entry in Gillow's Cost Books in the 1790s for: "Captain Davenport, a desk" written alongside this design. Although it may have been originally designed for shipboard use, because of its versatility, it was quickly assimilated into the home. Although the styles changed, the basic form remained popular for over a century and a quarter. This is one of the earliest and finest examples we have handled. |
