(Charles) Dean Wolstenholme, Jr. (English, 1798-1882)

An English Village

Oil on canvas, signed lower right.

Painting Size: 20” x 24.5”
Frame Size: 25 ” x 29”

Born in Waltham Abbey, Essex, Wolstenholme was the son of artist (Charles) Dean Wolstenholme, Sr, with whom he is often confused. He studied painting and drawing under his father as well as at the Royal Academy schools. He also studied engraving as a young man and much of his early work was reproductions of his father’s paintings. Wolstenholme’s primary subjects were sporting scenes and horse portraits as well as pigeons since he was a great pigeon fancier. He also painted many non-sporting scenes of which “Love in a Tub” and “The Death of Tom Moody” became popular prints.
