Albert Edward Sterner (American, 1863-1946)

"A Voice From the Sea"

Lithograph or monotype on Japan paper, signed and dated 1925 in the plate and pencil signed and inscribed indistinctly.

Sight Size: 11.25" x 7" Frame Size: 19" x 14.5" Sterner was born in England of American parents and studied in Birmingham and in Paris at the Académie Julian with Boulanger and Lefebvre. He also studied in Paris with Gérôme.
Although he lived and worked in Chicago as an illustrator and lithographer and moved to New York City in 1885, he spent most of the next twenty years in Europe.
Although Sterner painted and exhibited oil paintings throughout his career, he was primarily an illustrator and lithographer and believed illustrators should achieve the same respect as artists working in oils and watercolors.
Sterner was active in many of the artist societies including the American Watercolor Society, the National Academy of Design and the Society of Illustrators. His work is found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC), The Carnegie Institute, the Victoria and Albert Museum and others.
