One of the last of the long line of View Painters of Venice, Antonio Maria de Reyna Manescau was born in 1859 in Malaga and was a student at L’École des Beaux-Arts of Malaga and a pupil of Joaquin Martinez de la Vega. He first painted mostly genre scenes, but also landscapes and historical subjects. Encouraged to study abroad, he arrived in Rome and traveled on to Venice as early as 1876, where he fell in love with the architecture of the city. He spent the most of his life capturing not only the prominent landmarks of Venice but also the remote back canals and squares of Venice as seen in this painting of a small, picturesque square in the Sestiere San Polo. Reyna exhibited extensively including the Paris Exposition de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1887, and in Rome at the Exposition Universelle of 1911.
