Fine Antique Painted Satinwood Sewing or Work Table with flower and scrolling vine decoration and with embroidered panels (under glass) on all sides and the top. Below are two slides, one with glass top, the other for a cloth "basket". American, circa 1890 (small patch to rear leg). This late 19th century table is done in the fashion of the early 19th century when “. . .New England schoolgirls received instruction in painting Fancy furniture. This furniture included . . . a new form known as a ‘work stand’ or ’work table’ that served to store the tools and equipment essential to Fancy work. Work tables came with long, pleated bags suspended below for storing fabric and compartmented drawers for safeguarding a host of sewing equipment.” - Sumpter Priddy, "American Fancy", p. 26-27 15" x 13" x 28.75" |
