Lillian Cotton(American, 1901-1962)
Oil on canvas, signed lower right and dated: “Jan. (19)28?”
Painting size: 20” x 24”
Lillian Cotton studied at the André Lhote Academy in Paris and later at the Art Students League in New York with Robert Henri and George Bellows. Particularly active in the 1930’s and 40’s, she exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Paris Salon. She was also a member of the New York Society of Women Artists and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, a reflection of both her American and French artistic “roots.”
Cotton’s paintings are characterized by solid forms, clear colors and bold brushwork. Although she primarily painted figures, her style was well suited to landscape, evidenced by this quiet tropical scene.
Lillian Cotton is represented in the permeant collections of Florida State College and Seaton Hall University. The painter occasionally signed her works LC Impey. She is listed in Who Was Who in American Art (Falk, 1999) and the Dictionary of Women Artists (Petteys, 1985).
