Otto Pippel (German 1878-1960) "Venedig" Oil on Canvas, signed and retaining a label with title on the reverse.
Painting: 24" x 20" Otto Pippel was one of the most important of the German Impressionists. He was born in Lodz, Poland, in 1878, then emigrated to Germany where he enrolled at the School of Applied Arts in Straßburg in 1896. He studied painting in Karlsruhe, Strasbourg, and finally in Dresden. In 1909, he travelled to Paris, where the French Impressionists influenced him with their use of color to depict light.. Pippel joined the 'Luitpoldgruppe' in 1912 and exhibited at the Munich Glaspalast. He had regular exhibitions at the Galerie Brakl in Munich from 1915. At the outbreak of the First World War he was drafted. After the war, Pippel returned to his house in Planegg, where he spent the rest of his life painting landscapes, still lives and, most popularly, scenes of Venice such as this. He is widely collected in Germany and internationally and is represented in the Städtische Galerie in Lenbachhaus and the Städtische Galerie Rosenheim. |
