Backyard Birches Nandor (Ferdinand) Katona (Hungarian, 1864-1932) Oil on panel, with an estate label on the reverse. Primarily a landscaper painter, Katona was well known for his works depicting the Tatra region of Slovakia. In 1900, he received an honorable mention at the Universal Exposition in Paris for a landscape painting. He also participated in various other exhibitions winning gold medals in 1911 and 1913. His works are on display at the Strasky Castle in Slovakia and in the Swedish National Museum. Katona is listed in the Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs by Bénézit and Thieme-Becker, ed. Allgemeines Lexikon der bildenden Künstler vonder Antike bis zu Gegenwart.
