Hermann Gustave Simon (American, 1846-1895)

Oil on panel, signed and dated: “1875 and titled and signed and located “Dusseldorf, 1875” on paper label on reverse.

Born in Schlietz, Germany, Simon immigrated to the United States with his family at age two. By the time he reached adolescence, the decision to pursue an artistic education had been made.

He enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art (PAFA). He studied under Robert Wylie, George F. Bensell, and Henry C. Bispham, con-ecutively. The PAFA was also the site of his first exhibition in 1863 at age 17. He again presented there from 1876-1887 while concurrently ex-hibiting with the Philadelphia Society of Artists from 1879-1881 and again in 1884.

He was professionally recognized as an artist in the 1871 Philadelphia city directory. He was best known for his sporting pictures and landscapes, especially those that featured dogs.

Schultz is listed in Who Was Who in American Art by Falk and A Century of Philadelphia Artists by Schwarz.
