Church in Washington, DC by Lily Spandorf (Am. b.1915)
$825

Lily Gabriella Spandorf (American, 1915-2000)

The Church of the Covenant

Watercolor on paper, signed.

Sight size: 23” x 17” Frame size: 30.25” x 24.25”

Before making her home and career in Washington, DC, Spandorf was educated at the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna, Austria. However, once she settled in Washington, she became an active participant in the art community. She held memberships in the Washington Press Club and Artist’s Equity Association, as well as the Washington Watercolor Club. She exhibited widely from local venues such as Smithsonian Institution to the Bodley Gallery in New York. She also designed the 1963 U.S. Post Office Christmas stamp.

As a Washington “insider”, Spandorf had the honor of being commissioned by President Johnson to create works for him to present to visiting dignitaries. Among the recipients of these gifts were HRH Princess Margaret and Chung Hee Park, present of Korea.

Spandorf’s works are held in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution; White House; Museum of Fine Arts, Hagerstown, MD; and Municipal Museum of Rome, Italy.

She is listed in Who Was Who in American Art by Falk.

The Church of the Covenant was at 18th and N Streets, NW and was completed in 1889. It was torn down in 1966. See "Lily Spandorf’s Washington Never More" by Griffin and McCloskey, p. 103 for more about the church.
