"Port St. Jean" by Nathaniel Everett Green (English)

Nathaniel Everett Green (English, 1823 - 1899)

Port St. Jean (St.-John Cap-Ferrat, France)

Watercolor on paper, signed lower right, titled lower left

Painting Size: 11” x 20.75” (Unframed)

Green was a primarily a watercolorist, specializing in landscapes, buildings and interiors. He studied at the Royal Academy alongside Leighton, Millais and Rossetti. He exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy and other galleries Additionally he appears to have travelled extensively, painting scenes in France, Italy and the Middle East. Fro financial reasons, he adopted teaching as a profession and gained a widespread reputation such that in 1880 he was called to Balmoral to instruct the Queen, the Princess of Wales and Princess Beatrice. In 1890, weary of dreary London winters and seeking summer skies for his artistic work as well as his wife’s health, he made Cannes his winter home. We can surmise that he painted this scene of Port St. Jean, which is on the French Riviera, during one of his visits to Cannes.
