Littlefield was born in Roxbury, MA and studied at Harvard. He studied with Canadian born impressionist Adeline Wolever. His parents then gave him the financial support to study in Europe where he spent several years painting in St. Tropez and Paris and traveled from there to Italy to paint (1925-29). Littlefield returned home in 1929 and spent many summers at his parents home in Falmouth where he was inspired to paint in the style of Courbet, Corot and Cezanne. In the 1930’s, Littlefield exhibited at galleries in New York, including the Whitney and the Museum of Modern Art. In the 40’s he began working on perfecting his portraiture, moving away from landscape paintng. He founded the Cape Cod Art Association in 1947 and began to abandon his representational style for and abstract style. While living in New York in the 1950’s, Littlefield became active in the formation of The Club which helped establish the Abstract Impressionist movement.

At the time of his death, Littlefield’s work was included in numerous private collections and represented in the Worcester Art Museum; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the university museums of Harvard, Smith, and Vassar; the Addison Gallery; and the Museum of Modern Art.
