O’Leary was a noted artist, intellectual and political activist. She began her art career in the early 1960’s and studied with Canadian aritst Eric Gibbard and Taos founder Emil Bisttram. Her mother was a member of the Comanche Indian tribe. She specialized in themes of the American Indians and is best know for her sparse, stylized paintings of native American figures. O’Leary’s paintings are held in numerous museums including the Denver Art Museum. the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of the American Indian (New York) and the Peabody Museum (Cambridge, MA).
