Gaetano Lapis (Italian, 1704-1776) [Attrib]
Armida and Rinaldo
Painting: 34” x 48”
Lapis was an Italian painter of the late Baroque period. Being quite precocious in drawing and painting, he was sent to Rome in 1720 for a period of study where he began painting under the tutelage of Cristoforo Creo. He soon became a student of the much superior artist, Sebastino Conca. Lapis demonstrated a lively imagination in his paintings and he was able to escape the decadence that predominates Italian 18th century art. He painted a remarkable ceiling for the Palais Borghese in Rome representing, with great elegance, “The Birth of Venus”. Other works by Lapis include “The Virgin in the Midst of Saints”, “The Last Supper”, “Saint André d’Avellino”, and “L’Aurore”.
