Villon, born Gaston Emil Duchamp, changed his name to not be confused with his younger siblings, Marcel Duchamp and Raymond Duchamp-Villon.

Villon studied at the Académie Julian. In 1903, along with Henri Lebasque, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard and others, he helped organize the Salon d’Automne, which exhibited works earning them the name of “Fauves” for their paintings that were aggressively garish in color and abstract in composition.

Later in his career, Villon became known for his Cubist-style works and especially for his creation of a purely graphic language for Cubism.
