A landscape painter and textile designer, Mayer was born in Hungary and immigrated to the United States where he studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City with C.Y Turner, I. Olinsky and E. Ward (1908-15). He moved to Long Island after his schooling , visiting and painting in Gloucester and Cape Anne. His impressionist landscapes include views of Long Island, and New Jersey as well as New England.
Mayer exhibited extensively throughout his long career at the Corcoran Gallery, the National Academy of Design, the Salmagundi Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago and others.
