Cowslip Time)

Oil-on-canvas, signed lower right and titled upper right)

Painting: 18" x 14")
Frame: 29.5" x 25.5")

A painter of genre and children’s portraits, Scannell was also a noted magazine and children’s book illustrator. She would often incorporate Japanese dolls, tea sets and kimonos in her portraits of children. Her ability to depict a certain sweetness of a child’s face made her a popular portraitist. )

Scannell lived for years in Italy and Switzerland. In Italy and Paris she worked in various noted studios but it was not until she settled in London and took a studio of her own that she made painting her life work. Many of her works were reproduced as photogravures to make them more available to the public. )

Scannell exhibited frequently from 1870-1905 at the Manchester City Art Gallery, the Royal Hibernian Academy, the Society of Women Artists and the Royal Academy. She was also a member of the Society of Miniaturists. Titles of paintings exhibited at the Royal Academy included, “In the Schoolroom”, “The Torn Frock”, and “Hard Lines”. )
