Arthur Louis Townshend

Oil on canvas, signed and dated: “1900” lower right and signed, dated “July 1900” and inscribed with the horses names on the reverse.

Known for his paintings of rustic, equestrian and sporting subjects, Townshend exhibited six works at the Royal Academy. Working primarily in oils, he painted a number of racehorse portraits including the 1883 Derby winner, “St. Blaise”. He moved to Paris in 1885 where he resided for the remainder of his life.
