East was a painter of landscapes and rural scenes who was active around the turn of the 19th/20th century. No records seem to exist of any galleries where he might have exhibited. His style is often compared favorably to the work of Daniel Sherrin (a student of B.W. Leader) who was active around the same time and painted similar landscapes in the same areas of England. We speculate that H. East is another pseudonym used by Sherrrin., although this possibility does not seem to have been explored by scholars.
East’s subject matter include river scenes in North Wales such as “On the Llugwy” and “Church Pool, Bettws-Y-Coed” and several rural landscapes near Surrey such as “Near Gomshall, “Driving Sheep”, “A Surrey Landscape” and works such as this one near Guildford.
