The Matador’s Funeral
Jan Kurzke aka Hans Robert Kurzke Watercolor on paper, signed lower right. Reknown during his lifetime as a Marxist militant and painter, Kurzke was born in Hamburg, Germany. He fled the Nazi regime in 1933 and found refuge in Spain a year later. From 1936-1937, Kurzke fought in the Spanish civil war as a volunteer of the International Brigades.
