S.L. (Shields Landon) Jones (American, 1901-1997)

Jones has been referred to as “one of the last of the first generation of contemporary folk art masters”. Today, his drawings and carvings are held in the permanent collections of the American Folk Art Museum, Abbey Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Centre and the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian.

Jones did not begin drawing and carving until retiring as a carpenter and foreman for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. By his early 70’s, he was taking his small carvings to local West Virginia county fairs and winning regional recognition. After several successful years, he started carving larger figures and heads. These pieces were displayed and sold at a gift shop in a state park near his home. From there, they spread to galleries, museums and personal collections nationwide.
