Walkowitz was a talented artist and fascinating person in the history of early modern art. He broke new ground in his stylized depiction of the dancer Isadora Duncan in motion and continued to embrace new styles and themes throughout his career. He also helped to open doors for other young artists, most notably by encouraging Alfred Stielgitz to host an exhibition for Georgia O’Keefe in 1916.

Walkowitz began his artistic training at Cooper Union and continued his studies at the Education Alliance in New York City and the National Academy of Design. He also spent some time at the Académie Julien in Paris.

He held memberships in the American Artists Congress; People’s Artists Guild; American Society of Painters, Sculptors and Gravers and the Society of Independent Artists. In addition to being a member of the Society of Independent Artists, he exhibited with them. His work was also shown at the Stieglitz Little Gallery, Salons of America, Art Institute of Chicago and the Corcoran Gallery Biennials.

Today, his work is held in the permanent collections of the Hirshhorn Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Art, Museum of Modern Art in New York City and many other public institutions.
