Born in Philadelphia, PA, Pease was the son of a respected engraver. He worked in both oils and watercolors and was best known for his paintings of animals and birds. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1874-1886. Pease is listed in Who Was Who in American Art by Falk and Mantle Fielding’s Dictionary of American Painters, Sculptors and Engravers.
The supply stencil on the back of the canvas reads: “W. Schaus, Colorman, 749 Broadway, New York”. William Schaus was at that address from 1861-1885.
