Robert Fawcett (American, 1903-1967)

The Fall of the Fothergays: an illustration for publication in The Saturday Evening Post

Watercolor on Whatman board, signed with initials and retaining a paper label on reverse with publication information.

Image size: 14” x 16.75”

Fawcett began his artistic training as an apprentice to an engraver when his family immigrated to Canada from England. When they moved again to New York City, he continued to pursue his art through commercial work. At age 19, he returned to London to study at the Slade School of London University.

Fawcett returned to New York in 1924 and began a long career in advertising and editorial illustration. His attention to suburb draftsmanship, composition and research earned him a reputation as “the illustrators’ illustrator”.

He was a founding member of the Famous Artists Schools in Westport, CT. He was also the author of On the Art of Drawing. In 1967, he was elected to the Hall of Fame of the Society of Illustrators.

Fawcett is listed in "The Illustrator in America: 1860-2000" by Reed.
