A master of British 18th C. landscape painting, Wilson was first trained as a portrait painter in London. After spending time in Italy in the 1750's and studying the works of Claude Gellee, he developed a type of classical landscape that he brought with him back to England. He often referred to the drawings he did in Italy in later years for his Italian paintings as well as views of the rural environs of London and Wales. He often repeated his most popular designs and had numerous followers in his own lifetime. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy (1768).
