Gustav Adolph Wiegand (American,1870-1957)

Oil on artist board, signed.

Painting size: 9.75” x 12”
Frame size: 16” x 18”

German born and European educated, Wiegand embraced the United States as his home by the time he became a professional painter.

Wiegand studied at the Royal Academy of Dresden under Eugene Bracht. When he arrived in the United States, he apprenticed to William Chase to complete his training.

He was an active member of the artists’ community in New York. Among the many clubs to which he belonged were the prestigious Salmagundi Club, National Arts Club and Allied Artists of America.

His works were exhibited up and down the east coast and as far west as St. Louis where, at the World’s Fair, he took a medal for one of his paintings. Other venues to host his exhibitions included the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; Corcoran Gallery, Washington, DC; and the National Academy of Design, Society of Independent Artists and Allied Artists of America, all in New York.

His work is held in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, National Arts Club and Newark Museum.

Wiegand is listed in Who Was Who in American Art by Falk and Dictionary of American Painters, Sculptors & Engravers by Fielding.
